Born July 22 (Year Unknown)
Kate Maldonado lives in Massachusetts. She has a daughter and was/is married (it is uncertain due to lace of information on the web). She has always been interested in art and photography. Kate got her degree in digital photography in 2013. Her work is mostly surreal and conceptual images which are showed at national publication as well as gallery showings and are sold on etsy..com.
Style
Kate has shown a good use of color, textures, and patterns in her photos. These photos have a creepy feel to them. She makes the photos look cryptic and eerie. The models' faces are usually unseen and have hair covering any facial features. Many of these photos contain the model hovering in midair.
Philosophy
Kate Maldonado uses this work to express her thoughts. Her major ideas behind her work are personal. She states that her "photographic work is an ongoing visual diary" (etsy.com). Kate wants to show what her subconscious thinks about. She wants to share her thoughts and feelings through photos.
Influences
Kate's photography has helped me look at things in a different way. I have started trying to find things in the photo that might not be seen at first glance. I also like to see the mixture of patterns with an up close portrait. I try to show a lot more contrast in my photos. I focus more on the pattern of the background so that I can have a good focus.

Compare and Contrast
My final three images are not much like Kate's images. the only one that is very similar is my "Filled With Nature" and her "Shine On". They both have a black and white coloring, the photograph is double exposure, and the two pictures used are of a girl looking to the left and some kind of nature. The pictures that are not alike in any way (or so I think) is my "Happy Ghost" and her "Invocation". I tried to replicate her photo, but I could not find a background to fit that style of photo. Also, my model was just to happy for the job and I do not like to make things dark seeming. The third photo, (mine is "Creepy Girl", hers being "In Bloom") I think is similar as in the idea, but has very different pictures. Her photo has the model with hair that is flowers while I have my model have a tree growing out of her head. Similarly, they both have a headshot and the coloring is in black and white.
Personal Artist's Statement
My final three photos are very surreal. The first one "Creepy Girl" starts off as the idea that minds usually are constantly growing like a tree and showing that in a physical way of a tree coming out of one's head. I then focused on the eyes which are clouded and look blank to give it more of a creepy feel. My photo "Happy Ghost" shows a smiling girl hovering on a patch of grass and all of the colors are very bright. I also added the fact that this model does not have legs or feet, there is just a shadow underneath her making it look even more like she's floating. In my photo "Filled With Nature" I combined a picture of a girl looking over her left shoulder and a bush. Using contrasting devices, I darkened the bush to make it seem like the leaves could be birds. I think that this is my favorite photo.
